The following day, as I was working with the optometrist, two other female team members prayed about how to continue the ministry to these women, how to help them overcome the fears that haunt them and to view themselves as worthy and valuable to God.
They began with “A Letter from Jesus”, reading from appropriate parts of Song of Solomon, and explained to the women that each one of them is precious, and beautiful to God.
Then they showed them the comparison: Satan tells you you’re worthless and trash. God tells you you’re beautiful and valuable. One is a lie. The other is the Truth. The women then took ‘the lie’, whatever she had believed about herself that was a result of her horrible experiences, and the Truth, what God says about her, and wrote them down on pieces of paper. Then they took that lie, and tossed it in a fire, releasing the lie, and clinging to what was left: the Truth of who they are in Christ. It was a powerful, powerful exercise that encouraged the women to persevere in their faith. But still, their bellies were empty.
So before leaving, our team leader announced we were going to use the funds we brought for team expenses and buy food – 10 lbs of beans and 5 lbs of rice – for each woman, and we would give each one of them a bible.
